Housing Stability

As our neighborhood housing ages and new development happens, we want to advocate for, organize, and support healthy, affordable housing for everyone.

Neighbors coming together to care for the places they call home.

Shine Up Your Block helps residents come together to spruce up their block by organizing volunteer-led workdays focused on visible, meaningful improvements.

Residents can apply to have their block selected for a one-day volunteer project where we come alongside our neighbors to complete simple, high-impact improvements, like yard cleanup, trash removal, and light beautification.

How It Works

1. Residents Apply

A resident submits an application for their block, along with at least two neighbors who support the effort.

2. We Review & Plan

Our team reviews applications and selects blocks based on readiness, impact, and feasibility. We work with residents to define the project scope.

3. We Gather Volunteers

We recruit volunteers from across the community to serve alongside residents.

4. Shine Day

On a scheduled day, volunteers and neighbors come together to complete the project and “shine up” the block.

What Kind of Projects Are Included?

Shine Up Your Block focuses on low-lift, high-impact projects that can be completed in a single day.

Examples include:

  • Yard cleanup (leaves, debris, overgrowth)

  • Trash and litter pickup

  • Bush and hedge trimming

  • Light landscaping (mulching, planting flowers)

  • Basic exterior cleanup (porches, fences, shared spaces)

  • Small painting projects (railings, fences, etc.)

  • Alley or shared space cleanup

If you have a specific idea for your block, you can include it in your application.
